How to make Cognos analytics self-service same as or better than Power BI or Tableau

While Cognos is very good at data governance and enterprise reporting, both develop performance and report rendering performance are poor against other BI tool such as Power BI and Tableau. To realize the concept of Bimodal Analytics, Cognos has introduced data set, which is a cached collection of data items that can be used to increase performance, reduce workload on the database, and/or keep a “point in time” view of the data. This dataset is very much like data set in Power BI and Tableau. You do not need Tableau, but you can still perform all data analysis with visualization in Cognos.  The major advantage of this solution is that all investment in Cognos will leveraged for self-serve.

The process of creating data set does provide some transformations, such as custom column, and filter.  Comparing with query, there are no UNION, JOIN and overall detail filters.
